How to do it with the compressor in Logic Sidechain compression is still used for the very same thing, but can also be used very creatively, especially in a mix.

Instead of having to manually lower the fader while speaking, the DJ could just leave it all to the compressor, leaving his/her hands free to get on with more important stuff. The compressor reacted only to the voice so that it would would automatically duck the track as the DJ spoke. There would be no compression applied to the track while playing until the DJ started to talk. However this could happen automatically if the track was going through a compressor, and the DJ’s voice was the side chain. If you wanted to talk while a track was playing, it made sense to lower the volume of the track. Why?īack in the old days this was a very useful feature for radio DJs. Instead of the compressor doing it’s stuff on the signal going into the regular input (let’s call this the main signal), what happens is that a completely different signal can be fed into the sidechain and instead of the main signal dictating how the compressor behaves, the sidechain signal does this so the compression applied to the main signal is no longer based on what that is doing dynamically but it is based on what is happening on a completely different track.

This is one of the more creative features of compression, not just the standard Logic compressor plugin, but of many of the good old analogue compressors. The only difference between the two MB comps is that their soloed zones must always be reversed.Īlthough this is complex, the use of two auxes does give you a discrete volume control over the compressed zone which you can use to fine tune your overall sound.Using the Sidechain in Logic’s Compressor So if you have a compression zone of 100 Hz to 500 Hz on the first comp, make sure the second one is set the same. The caveat is that any changes you make to the first MB Comp's frequency zone must be done to the second one as well so this can be picky as you find your sweet spot. (One soloed zone in the first MBC, the other 3 in the second.)Īfter this, it's simply a matter of setting up your track compressor on the first aux to what ever strength and ratio of compression that you need. Now reverse the soloed zones in the second MB Comp. Option-Command-drag the first MB Comp over to this aux so that you will have the identical settings across the two MB comps. Insert a track compressor after that and side chain it to the track you'll be getting your sidechain signal from. Set all compression settings to off - the MBC is NOT going to be doing the compression duties. Insert one Multiband Compressor and in the MBC solo the zone you will be compressing. So now you will have two auxes being fed by the same bus. Create one more aux and set it's input to the same bus. Set the output of original track to an unused bus.

To do this you'll need two extra unused Aux tracks plus your original and sidechain tracks. Here's one way to do this in Logic with the most control over your frequency zone of compression. There are 3rd party compressors like Pro-C where this is easily done since it both side chains and you can set the top and bottom edges of the frequency zone you want to compress. Yes, this is possible in Logic but a bit of a kludge.
